CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University softball team fell in both games of Friday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader against nationally ranked Montevallo, dropping the opener 13–0 in five innings before falling 4–0 in the nightcap at University Field.
Game 1: Montevallo 13, Delta State 0 (5 inn.)
Montevallo opened the afternoon with a six-run first inning and never looked back, using 11 hits and three home runs to take the run-rule victory.
The Falcons struck for five runs with two outs in the opening frame, highlighted by a three-run homer from Emma Faulk and a two-RBI single from Bentlee Stiner. Montevallo added six more in the fifth, including a grand slam from Riley Daniel and a solo shot from Ariana Pinder.
Delta State managed three hits in the contest, coming from
Maeve Lavoy,
Kyleigh Wheaton, and
Maya Mills. Freshman
Ellie Cox (1–7) took the loss, while
Kinsley Byrd earned the win for Montevallo after tossing three hitless innings.
Game 2: Montevallo 4, Delta State 0
Delta State produced a stronger defensive effort in the second game, scattering seven hits and keeping the Falcons off the board until the sixth inning. However, Montevallo capitalized on a pair of defensive miscues to plate three unearned runs in the frame before adding an RBI single from Makayla Peters.
The Lady Statesmen recorded seven hits—matching Montevallo—but were unable to push a run across.
Joryie McKnight led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while
Ally Agner,
Carly Dunigan,
Calli McConnell,
Kyleigh Wheaton, and
Maya Mills each added a hit.
Maeve Lavoy (6–8) went the distance in the circle, allowing just one earned run on six hits with one strikeout across 92 pitches.
