CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University women's soccer team battled through a defensive contest Wednesday afternoon, earning a 0-0 draw against Union University at Delta Field.
The Lady Statesmen (1-3-2, 0-1-1 GSC) turned in a strong performance in goal and along the back line, highlighted by a career day from goalkeeper Kim Bircher. The sophomore recorded 15 saves, tied for fifth all-time in program history across 90 minutes, keeping Union off the scoreboard despite sustained pressure throughout the match.
Union (0-3-2, 0-0-2) controlled much of the attacking tempo, finishing with 23 total shots and 15 on target, while also holding a 60 percent edge in possession. Delta State countered with 11 shots, placing four on frame, but was unable to break through against Union goalkeeper Antia Lopez Rodriguez, who made four saves in the draw.
The Lady Bulldogs generated consistent opportunities, especially in the second half, tallying 15 shots after the break. However, Bircher and the Delta State defense stood firm, turning away multiple close-range chances to preserve the clean sheet.
Offensively, Delta State was paced by Avery Hooker and Mariela Dolan, who combined for four shots, while Kennedi Turner and Bryleigh Taylor each placed attempts on target. The Lady Statesmen also created chances off set pieces, earning four corner kicks in the match.
Union held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks and applied late pressure in the final minutes, but Delta State's defensive unit remained organized to secure the result.
Delta State will look to build on the defensive effort as Gulf South Conference play continues as the Lady Statesmen welcome UAH to Delta Field Saturday.
