CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State delivered its most complete performance of the season Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 6-1 victory over UAH at Delta Field.
The Lady Statesmen (2-3-2, 1-1-1 GSC) wasted little time asserting control, erupting for five first-half goals to put the match out of reach early. Delta State struck twice in a rapid sequence at the 15:10 mark, as
Avery Hooker opened
the scoring off an assist from
Emma Earwood before
Mariela Dolan followed seconds later with an unassisted finish.
The offensive surge continued late in the half, beginning with
Millie Congerton's goal in the 39th minute off a feed from
Kennedi Turner. Turner added one of her own less than two minutes later, and
Millie Webb capped the dominant half with a goal in the 45th minute to give Delta State a commanding 5-0 lead at the break.
Delta State outshot UAH 13-6 in the opening 45 minutes and controlled the pace throughout.
Hooker added her second goal of the match in the 56th minute to extend the advantage to 6-0 before UAH found the net in the 61st minute for its lone score.
The Lady Statesmen finished with a 23-11 advantage in shots and placed 10 on target, while also earning eight corner kicks in the match. Goalkeeper
Kim Bircher secured the win, recording four saves across 90 minutes in net.
Hooker led the way with two goals, while Dolan, Congerton, Turner and Webb each added one. Earwood, Turner and
Bryleigh Taylor were credited with assists in the victory.
Delta State returns to action next week as Gulf South Conference play continues as the Lady Statesmen Travel to Livingston, Ala., to take on West Alabama.
