CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State men's soccer dropped a tightly contested Gulf South Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, falling 1–0 to unbeaten Alabama Huntsville at Delta Field. The Chargers scored in the sixth minute and made the early strike stand behind a disciplined defensive effort, despite a late surge from the Statesmen.
UAH's lone goal came at 5:08, when Stellios Starakis finished a feed from Wesley Atoyebi inside the box. The Statesmen settled in defensively after the early setback, but the Chargers controlled possession for much of the first half, holding a 4–1 shot advantage.
Delta State generated more chances after halftime, outshooting UAH 4–5 in the second period and earning three corner kicks.
Callum Black pushed a shot wide in the 57th minute, and
Matthew Nicklas forced a save from UAH keeper Sonny Wright at 61:40. The Statesmen produced two dangerous attempts in the closing minute —
Sioni Benham and
Logan Funk each put shots on frame — but Wright turned both aside to preserve the clean sheet.
Daniel Santema finished with two saves in goal for Delta State, while Wright recorded three stops for UAH. The match's physical tone produced 16 combined fouls in the first half and a total of six yellow cards. DSU played the final 39 minutes down a man following a red card issued at 50:51.
Nicklas, Black, Benham, Funk, and
Elijah Belk each recorded shots for the Statesmen, who fell to 2–5–1 overall and 0–2–0 in GSC play. UAH improved to 5–0–1 and 2–0–1 in the league.
Delta State returns to action next week as conference play continues this week on the road Wednesday at West Alabama.
