Biography
2009-10: OUTLOOK: Returns for his senior year this season with an opportunity of finishing his career as Delta State’s all-time assists leaders. After registering 205 assists last season, Akins ranks fourth on the career list with 390, only 159 assists away from tying the all-time mark. He also ranks ninth in career steals at Delta State with 119. A tremendous leaper with great ball skills, Akins is one of the top point guards in the Gulf South Conference, and has improved each season as Delta State’s floor general and team leader.
2008-09: Started all 30 games the Statesmen played last season, and was the only member of the team to do so…Averaged 7.8 points and 6.8 assists per game…Led the team in assists (205) and steals (38) for the third season in a row…His 6.8 assists per game led the Gulf South Conference and was fifth in the nation…Handed out a career-best 12 assists in win over Concordia-Selma (12/4/08) and 10 or more assists seven times during the season…Scored a career high 22 points in Delta State’s 72-70 win at Harding (1/29/09)…Named to GSC’s All-West Division First Team and the DakTronics All-South Region Second Team…Was also named to the GSC Academic Honor Roll
2007-08: Played in all 26 contests, starting 20…Led the team in assists (111) and steals (39)…Finished fifth in the conference in assists (4.3) and eighth in three-point percentage (.411) Shot 70 percent (45-of-64) from the free throw line…Averaged 8.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game…Season-high 17 points in a win at West Alabama 11/21/07…Season-high nine assists versus Dillard 12/18/07and Arkansas Tech (2/28/08)...GSC Academic Honor Roll recipient.
2006-07: Co-Freshmen of the Year for the GSC Western Division...Played in 22 and started 19 games...Led team in assists (74) and steals (42)...Averaged 5.8 points per game and 3.0 rebounds as a true freshman.
PREP: Three-year letter winner at Madison Central High School under Head Coach Jeff Heath…Three year All-district selection…Two-time All-area…Named 2005 Madison County Player of the Year…Also named All-State and a member of the Clarion Ledger's Dandy Dozen team...Led the Jaguars to the 2005 MHSAA State Championship...Member of the Student Government Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
