OVERVIEW
DSU cheerleading is a year long commitment. The squad will consist of up to 20 members selected at tryouts, which are held in the Spring. DSU cheer squad members strive to support all Delta State Athletic teams. The Delta State Cheerleaders will cheer at ALL home football games and ALL home men's and women's basketball games. We will cheer at a couple of away games and post season games for football and post season games for basketball. We participate in pep rallies and school and community parades. We serve as ambassadors for the university, making appearances throughout the year in the community and on campus.
ELIGIBILITY AND ACADEMICS
Anyone interested in becoming a part of the DSU cheer squad must follow the standard admissions procedure of Delta State University. If you have any questions regarding the admissions process, please contact the admissions office (662-846-4020). You must provide proof of acceptance to Delta State University at the time of tryouts. A 2.0 GPA is the minimal requirement for athletics, but I encourage you to excel in the classroom with at least a 2.5 GPA or greater. Study hall is provided through athletics and an academic coach is provided to help you with future scheduling and excused absences for athletic events.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Cheerleaders on scholarship are required to maintain full-time student status and an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher. Scholarships are available and will be based on your status on the squad.

DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY'S FIGHTING OKRA AND STATESMEN MASCOTS
The Delta State Statesmen and Fighting Okra are a part of the spirit team. They will both receive a scholarship and must maintain full time student status with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
If you would like to use the Statesmen and/or Fighting Okra mascots the cost will be $25 per mascot for university request and $40 per mascot for outside university request. This is something new, but our mascots have very old and worn attire. You are helping us raise money to replace their uniforms. Your request must be received 14 days prior to the event. If you would like to request the mascots for your event, please complete the request application and email it back to
mbevans@deltastate.edu
A few rules to note if you would like them at your event:
- The overall time of appearance for the mascots cannot exceed three hours.
- The Statesmen and Fighting Okra may be in costume for 45 minutes at a time and less than that in excessive heat and humidity.
- Our mascots are full time students at Delta State and appearances should not interfere with their class schedule.
- The Statesmen and Fighting Okra will need a private place to change.
