Joao Yamacita, a senior on the Delta State University men’s tennis team, was named the CableOne/Farm Bureau GoStatesmen.com Male Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the Statesmen to a 6-3 victory over Shorter University this past weekend in Rome, Ga.
The Londrina, Brazil, native claimed the victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Malik Yawar 6-1, 6-1. Yamacita teamed with Andrew Hildenbrand to oust Malik Yawar/Gregoire Vincent 8-6 at No. 2 doubles as well.
With the win, the Statesmen earned their sixth Gulf South Conference win of the season, the most conference wins in program history.
The Statesmen return to action on Thursday, April 19 versus the University of Montevallo in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament in Montgomery, Ala., at 9:00 a.m.
