CLEVELAND- The Statesmen battled hard for 90 minutes in the Delta sun, but it was the visitor Christian Brothers who came out on top, blanking Delta State 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at Delta Field. The Statesmen lose their second straight and fall to 7-4-1 (0-1) while the Bucs improve to 4-5-1 (1-1) on the year.
Set pieces have seemed to plague the Statesmen as of late and it was a corner that caused the first goal. Clark Bradford's kick traveled through the box and looked to be out of play before brought back in and scored by Zach Tubinis, 1-0 Bucs.
The Statesmen had only one good chance in the first half, as David Horstmann's effort was equally saved by Daniel Foster.
CBU made it a 2-0 game ten minutes later with a goal by Andrew Ballard. That was enough to get their first conference win on the year.
Keeper Trey Jones finished with four saves in the loss.
The Statesmen take a break from conference play and travel to Houston, Texas to take on Houston Baptist next Monday. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
