PENSACOLA, Fla.- The Delta State University women's basketball team was looking to keep some kind of momentum entering Sunday's game against West Florida, but it was the home team who earned their first win on the season, 58-64, on day two of the West Florida Tip-off Classic at UWF Field House. The loss drops the Lady Statesmen to 1-4 on the season. West Florida improves to 1-1.
It was destined to be a battle from the opening tip-off, as Delta State took an early 4-1 lead. West Florida fought back to tie the contest at 13-13 with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Both teams would grasp the lead, only for the other to quickly retake it. Delta State, at one point, led by as many as four with 14:56 left to play, but it was the Argos who finished the half with a 28-27 lead.
The second half looked to be as good as the first, with both teams stepping up their intensity. West Florida wasted no time after the break to set the tempo, going on a 7-0 run with 16:42 left in the game. The Argos never looked back.
Delta State fought back to cut the deficit to 38-36 with 14:42 remaining, but the Argos would not let up their scoring and were able to hold on for the six-point win.
The Lady Statesmen were once again led by senior forward
LaMaesha McAdory, who narrowly missed her second double-double of the season, with a 12 point, nine rebound performance.
Bug Cooper and
Courtney Wilson finished with 10 points apiece, while
Moe Bell finished with eight, including 2-of-6 from behind the arch.
Delta State shot 39 percent from the field (22-of-56), despite making 11-of-18 from the line. West Florida finished with a slightly better margin, shooting 42 percent (26-of-56). UWF also connected on 4-of-5 from behind the arch.
The Argos had three players finish in double figures led by junior guard Amy Drake, who finished with a game-high 22 points. Teammate Dominique Boykins finished with 15 points. Victoria Hunt rounded out the top scorers with 11.
Delta State returns to Cleveland for their home opener November 21-22, as they host the Margaret Wade Classic at Walter Sillers Coliseum. West Florida will be the opponent on day one. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
