CLEVELAND- The Delta State University Lady Statesmen rallied from behind in the second half to pick up a 62-52 win over North Georgia on the final day of the 2008 Margaret Wade Classic Saturday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Delta State picked up a 12-0 run in the second half and never looked back, as DSU improved to 3-4 on the year. North Georgia falls to 1-1.
The Lady Statesmen trailed in the opening 10 minutes of the ball game 17-11 and struggling to find the shot from short range. North Georgia, fresh off their first win on the year the night before, were looking to make it 2-0 against the GSC this season.
Delta State continued to struggle as the half continued, shooting 29 percent from the floor. However, they kept themselves in the contest at the free-throw line, going 5-of-5. The Lady Saints were on target from the opening tip-off, shooting 47 percent from the floor, and headed into the locker room with a 25-19 advantage.
Veronica Walker picked up seven points off the bench to lead the Lady Statesmen, while Syretha Marble tallied nine for North Georgia.
Delta State's offensive struggles continued to start the second half, but the green-and-white faithful rallied behind their home team as the Lady Statesmen clawed back into it midway through to tie the ballgame at 40-40, fueled by a 12-0 run.
Delta State would then take the lead with 8:09 remaining in the game, their first lead of the ball game, 42-40 and never trailed again.
With less than three minutes to go, North Georgia continued to pressure the DSU defense and managed to cut the lead to one, but the Lady Statesmen held their ground once again giving up just two points in the final 50 seconds of the game for the win.
Delta State had three players finish in double figures led by Walker, who had 16 points. Teammate
LaMaesha McAdory had her second double-double on the season with a 14 point 11 rebound performance. Bug Cooper rounded out the top scorers with 12. Delta State shot, a much improved, 50 percent from the floor in the second half, despite shooting 39 percent for the game.
The Lady Saints also had three players finish in double figures. All-Wade Classic MVP Syretha Marble finished with a game-high 19 points, while Whitney Randolph and Brooke Baker finished with 15 and 13 respectively.
The Lady Statesmen hit the road for a three game trip starting off in Livingston, Ala., Nov. 25, as they take on the Tigers of West Alabama. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
SAU 70 vs. UWF 67
In game one of the double-header Southern Arkansas picked up their first win of the year, defeating West Florida 70-67. The Lady Muleriders improve to 1-3 on the year while the Lady Argos fall to 2-2.
The teams were tied 32-32 at the half, the game looking it could go either way. SAU's Kmaria Hobbs led all scorers with 11 points at the break. West Florida was led by Jessica Young who had nine points and three rebounds.
Southern Arkansas turned up the heat in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the floor including 7-of-10 in free-throws. The Lady Argos struggled from three-point range, shooting 2-of-7 for the night.
Goldie White finished with a game-high 25 points and three rebounds for the Lady Muleriders while Hobbs finished with 16.
West Florida was led by Young who finished with the only double-double of the game, 18 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Tiffany Williams also finished in double figures racking up 14.
