MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State University men's basketball team placed six players in double figures, as a second half turnaround proved to be enough to pull out a 99-87 win over Montevallo Monday night at BankTrust Arena. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 2-1 on the season, while snapping a four game win streak for the Falcons, who fell to 4-3.
The Statesmen had a slow start to the ballgame, trailing for most of the first half. Their largest lead was three points with 18:50 left to play. Both teams battled back and forth, basket for basket, but it was the home team that was able to gain momentum quickly and hold onto the lead until
Oliver Mansour gave the Statesmen the lead for the second time with under eight minutes to play on a floater off the glass.
With the Falcons lead stretched to eight points, Delta State slowly cut the deficit to within two by Mansour's jumper with under a minute remaining.
Brad Skipper nabbed a botched Andre McMillan three-point effort and drove down court to find
Eric Spencer, who tied the game at 46-46 heading into halftime. Delta State shot 55.6 percent from the floor, including 12-of-16 from the line.
The Statesmen were looking to carry that momentum over into the second half, starting off the frame on a 4-0 run. However the Falcons, winners of their last four, quickly shifted the pace of the game in their favor and were able to retake the lead for several minutes.
Junior transfer
Joe McCray hit a three-point bucket to tie the game at 59-59 with 15:10 to play and the Statesmen never looked back. The green-and-white led by as many as 12, as they would hold onto to the victory, 99-87.
