LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.- The Lady Statesmen rallied for 30 points in the second half with the lead and possibly the win at hand , but it was American International who came out victorious 64-58 after sending the game in overtime on the final day of the Disney's DII Tip-off East Coast Classic. The Lady Statesmen dropped to 0-3 for the tournament while American picked up their first win to finish 1-2.
Delta State dominated the majority of the first half, at one time leading by seven. American International took their first lead of the ball game with a little over four minutes left to play. The game was tied at 19-19 before they scored six unanswered points to take a slim lead at half time, 26-24.
Delta State came out in the second half and again got off to a great start thanks in large part to
Veronica Walker who finished with a team-high 14 points off the bench. As a team, Delta State shot 34.5 percent from the floor including 50 percent from behind the arch while holding American International to a dismal 21 percent.
The Lady Statesmen were a head 54-50 with: 45 seconds remaining but couldn't hold on for the win, as American International rallied back scoring four unanswered to the send the game into OT where they would go on to win, outscoring Delta State 10-4.
Delta State shot 33 percent for the game, despite 71 percent from the free throw line. Walker who finished with 14 points also led the team in rebounds with nine.
Tamara Reed finished with nine points, all coming from behind the arch while LaMesha McAdory and Shun Townsend finished with eight points respectively.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Laechia Conley who finished with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Jeanette Johnathan and Stacy Boisvert finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Lady Statesmen will go back on the road in two weeks as they travel to Pensacola, Florida for the University of West Florida tournament. They take on Tuskegee November 15 with a noon tip-off.
