Lady Statesmen stampede Tigers, 63-38

CLEVELAND- The Delta State University women's basketball team picked up their sixth straight win Monday night with a 63-38 win over West Alabama in day one of the sixth annual Lloyd Clark Classic at Walter Sillers Coliseum. With the win, the Lady Statesmen improve to 7-4, while the Lady Tigers drop to 2-7. 

Delta State was on fire right from the tip-off, holding the Lady Tigers to just 25 percent shooting while shooting 40 percent themselves (10-of-25). Moe Bell was nearly perfect from three point range, knocking down 3-of-5 to lead the Lady Statesmen with nine points at break.

The Lady Statesmen were solid in the paint with 12 points, as they held on to a 29-16 lead at the halfway mark. 

The second half was just a continuation of the first, with Delta State controlling the paint, racking up 36 on the night. The defense played solid all night, holding West Alabama to 27 percent from the floor.
The Lady Statesmen shot 46 percent for the game, including 13-of-19 at the line. 

Veronica Walker had another solid night off the bench, finishing with a game-high 20 points.  Bell finished with 12. Courtney Wilson also finished in double-figures with 10. 

The Lady Statesmen will take on Fort Valley State at 5 p.m. in game two of the double-header on Tuesday. Arkansas-Monticello and West Alabama battle it out in game one at 3 p.m. 

In game one, Fort Valley State won a close battle with the GSC's own Arkansas-Monticello 86-77. The Lady Wildcats improve to 4-1 on the season while UAM drops just their second game on the season and fall to 6-2. 

Fort Valley had three players finish in double-digits led by Shekiya Tarpkins and Takesha Riggs who knocked down 22 points apiece while Amma-Bem-Oko finished with 11.

Arkansas-Monticello were led by Monica Perkins-Miller who finished with a double-double and game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. Erika Taylor finished with 20 while Andrea Dubose had 14.
