CLEVELAND- The Delta State University women's basketball team had two players record double-doubles Tuesday night, as the Lady Statesmen defeated Fort Valley State, 75-67, in game four of the sixth annual Lloyd Clark Classic at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Delta State picks up their seventh straight win and remain undefeated at home, as they improve to 8-4. Fort Valley falls to 4-2.
The Lady Statesmen got off to an uncharacteristicly slow start, as Fort Valley rolled to a 15-3 lead and quickly established their game in the first three minutes. Delta State was not ready to back down, as they slowly fought their way into the ball game and went into the half with a slim 36-34 lead.
Despite the slow start, the green-and-white shot 48 percent from the floor in the first half, including 6-of-11 from the line.
Veronica Walker once again contributed off the bench, leading the team with nine points.
Takesha Riggs was the leading scorer at the half with 19 points for the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Statesmen started off the second half much better than the first, and were looking to keep the Wildcats at a distance. Delta State shot 49 percent from the field, including 20-of-29 from the line. During an important stretch in the second half, DSU nailed 14 from the line.
LaMaesha McAdory finished with another double-double scoring a team-high 20 points and clearing 10 rebounds. Walker was quiet in the second half, but still managed to knock down 16 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Bug Cooper and
Moe Bell finished with 13 and 12 points respectively to round out the top scorers.
The Lady Statesmen will host Montevallo Thursday night, their final home game of the fall season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
In game one, West Alabama needed 45 minutes to get the 63-61 win over Arkansas-Monticello. The Lady Tigers earned just their second win on the season and improve to 2-7 while UAM falls to 6-2.
The Lady Tigers shot 43 percent from the floor, despite going 2-of-8 in overtime. Valarie Harris finished with a game-high 23 points while teammate Keiara Middleton topped out at 13.
