BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Delta State University women's basketball team saw their eight game winning streak come to a close on Monday, 57-55, to Lynn University in the waning moments of the opening game of the Double Tree Guest Suites Classic. The Fighting Knights improved to 7-3 on the season, while the Lady Statesmen slipped to 9-5.
After a blistering start by Lady Statesmen sophomore
Moe Bell, who scored 15 points in the first seven minutes of the contest, the Fighting Knights, trailing by as many as 11 late in the first period, mounted a furious comeback to spark a 7-0 run to close out the half down just, 32-28. Bell led the Lady Statesmen with 15 points.
The Lady Statesmen connected on 44 percent of their first half shots (13-of-29), while holding the Fighting Knights to 29 percent on 11-of-37 attempts.
Delta State stretched the lead out once again to double digits early in the second period. Lynn again found a way to get back into the game, as Crystal Ahmed gave LU its first lead of the game, 39-38, at 16:33 of the second half when she knocked down a three-pointer just outside the arc. LU's advantage was short lived though, as
Veronica Walker converted on a pair of free-throws moments later, 40-39.
Madeleine Doyle's hard fought rebound and assists to Carley Dolci, who connected on a three-pointer, tied the game at 42.
LaMaesha McAdory put DSU back up again, 44-42, with two shots at the charity stripe, the second of five lead changes in the second half.
Momentum swung in the Knights' favor as they broke open a five point lead with 5:05 left to play, 55-50.
Delta State tied the game at 55-55 following a three-pointer by Bug Cooper and two more free-throws by Walker. A costly foul by the freshman forward cost her team with 23 seconds remaining in the game, as it put Doyle at the line. Lynn's freshman forward hit one-of-two shots before Cooper threw the ball away to Skardzinska in a last ditch effort. LU wrapped up the game 57-55 for the win.
The Knights victory avenges last year's 68-51 loss to the Lady Statesmen in Cleveland, Miss.
Bell led all scorers with 15 points, but went scoreless after the eight minute mark of the first half.
Kirsten McBride, Lamaesha McAdory, and Bug Cooper all added 10 points each. Cooper dished out nine assists with McAdory adding a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Lynn was led by Eve Skardniska's 13 point and 11 rebounds.
