CLEVELAND- Delta State battled the wind all afternoon, scoring both goals in the first half to hold on to a 2-0 win over Lyon College Saturday morning. The win extends their streak to five, (5-1) the best start in team history.
The Statesmen had control of most the first half, posting up nine shots on keeper Matt Callaway after scoring within in the opening ten minutes. Cade Parker's pass in the penalty area found Aaron Wilbanks for his first on the season, 1-0 Statesmen.
David Smith doubled the lead at the 37 minute as he dribbled past four Lyon defenders before calmly slotting under the extended leg of keeper Callaway. It was Smith's seventh on the year.
The Scots threatened more in the second half, however the Statesmen defense led by senior Trey Jones kept them scoreless. Jones finished with two saves on the day for his fourth straight shutout win.
The Statesmen travel to Union University September 16. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
