Statesmen stunned by Bulldogs, tie 2-2 after 2OT

JACKSON, Tenn. –The Statesmen scored two goals early but couldn't hold on to the win as Union rallied back to tie the game at 2-2 despite two overtime periods. The tie is the first on the season for the Statesmen as they fall to 5-1-1 while the Bulldogs fall to 3-3-1.

Junior David Horstmann scored his first two goals on the season within the opening 15 minutes to give the Statesmen a 2-0 advantage.

With those two goals, Horstmann needs one more to tie the all-time record of 15 held by Mike Smith.

Union would pull within one with a goal in the 36th minute by Paul Turner to make it a 2-1 game before the break.

Things turned around for the Bulldogs in the second half as they pressured the Statesmen defense racking up 12 shots in the second half alone. They tied the game just after the break with a goal from Wagner Oliveira.

The game remained tied until the final whistle was blown after two extra periods of play

Senior goalkeeper Trey Jones racked up a season-high 13 saves on the night while his counterpart, James Landham recorded six.

The Statesmen will return home this Thursday to take on Palm Beach Atlantic at Delta Field. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
