MEMPHIS, TENN. –The Delta State University women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, led by More Bell's 15 points, as the Lady Statesmen downed Christian Brothers 74-42 Saturday at Canale Arena. The Lady Statesmen (13-5, 3-0 GSC) claimed their 27th straight Gulf South Conference victory in the win, while CBU dropped to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
"We played very well today at times, but we still have a ways to go," said Sandra Rushing, Lady Statesmen head coach. "We made some good adjustments mid-way through the first half and they carried us to the end. Moe and Bug played well at guard, and Veronica and LaMaesha were tough for them to contain inside."
After a sluggish start offensively, the Lady Statesmen shook off an early 7-2 Christian Brothers lead to close the half with a 36-22 halftime edge. Bug Cooper led the Lady Statesmen at the break with nine and four assists.
Delta State's pressure defense held CBU to just 23 percent in the first half on 6-of-26 shooting. The three-point shot kept CBU in the half, as the Lady Bucs connected on 3-of-11 from deep. CBU was 7-of-9 at the free throw line in the half as well.
The Lady Statesmen shot a blistering 52.4 percent in the opening frame on 11-of-21 attempts from the floor. DSU also connected on 3-of-5 three-point attempts and 11-of-12 from the line.
The Lady Bucs were led by Tanaeya Worden with eight points.
The second half was dominated by Delta State's inside game, as the Lady Statesmen rolled to a 74-32 victory. DSU outscored the Lady Bucs 38-20 in the half and led by as many as 33 with 3:32 left to play.
Delta State shot 56.5 percent in the second half to finish the game at 54.5 percent (24-44) from the field, and 6-of-11 from three-point range. DSU also connected on 20-of-25 free throw attempts in the game.
CBU managed just 27.1 percent (13-of-48) from the field and 4-of-17 from three.
The Lady Statesmen dominated the inside scoring 32-18, and the bench scored 29 points to CBU's 11.
Moe Bell, a sophomore guard from Madison, led all scorers with 15 points for DSU.
Bug Cooper added 14 points and eight assists, while
Veronica Walker dropped in 13 points with six boards.
LaMaesha McAdory pulled down eight rebounds and scored 12 points as well.
Tameka Wooten led CBU with 12 points.
The Lady Statesmen will travel to Magnolia, Ark., on Thursday, Jan. 22 to face the Lady Riders of Southern Arkansas University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center. J.T. Webb and Troy Treasure will have the call starting at 5:15 p.m. on the Statesmen Sports Network.
