Lady Statesmen extend home streak to 30 games, defeat ATU 59-33

CLEVELAND-Bug Cooper finished with a double-double and Veronica Walker finished with 22 points to lead the Delta State University Lady Statesmen to a 59-33 win over Arkansas Tech Saturday afternoon at Walter Sillers Coliseum. 

Delta State extends its home winning streak to 30 games, while also extending their Gulf South Conference winning streak to 29. 

The Lady Statesmen improve to 15-5 overall and take sole possession of first place in the West Division at 5-0.  The Golden Suns fall to 14-4 and 4-1 in league play. 

Delta State was nearly unstoppable in the first 10 minutes of the ball game, establishing a 23-4 lead and holding, the Golden Suns scoreless for 10:28 before Henriette Ellingsen drained a three-point basket. 

The Lady Statesmen dominated defensively, forcing 12 turnovers in the half and holding ATU to 25 percent shooting, including 1-of-9 from three point range. 

Delta State continued to press the court shooting 61 percent for the half and racking up 26 points in the paint to head into the locker room with a 37-14 lead. 

Veronica Walker's 17 points at the break were as many as the entire Golden Suns squad. 

The Golden Suns opened the half much better than the first, outscoring DSU 7-6 in the first three minutes.  

With 13 minutes remaining, the Lady Statesmen streatched the lead to 43-21, and cruised to the largest margin of victory over Arkansas Tech in three years, 59-33.  

The Lady Statesmen shot 56 percent for the game (26-of-56) and forced 23 turnovers from ATU. 

Walker finished with a game-high 22 points, going a perfect 10-for-10 from the field and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.  Her 10-for-10 performance tied the DSU school record for field goal percentage in a game. 

Copper finished with her first double-double of the season, 13 points and 13 assists. 

Arkansas Tech was held to just 32 percent shooting (12-of-37) from the floor. Amanda Grappe, who entered the game averaging 20.5 points per game, finished with a team-high seven points. 

The Lady Statesmen will be on the road Thursday, Jan. 29 in Searcy, Ark., as they battle Harding University at the Rhodes Field House. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting at 5:15 p.m.  J.T. Webb and Troy Treasure will have the call.
