MEMPHIS – Christian Brothers University's Jack Richardson netted the match-winning goal in the 88th minute to lift the Bucs to a 3-2 win over Delta State in Memphis on Wednesday in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams.
Richardson's goal was the first in more than 30 minutes of action, as
David Horstmann tied the match for the Statesmen in 58th minute. It was Horstmann's eighth goal of the season, with
Patrick Grafton getting credit for the assist.
Freshman goalkeeper
Flavio Romero had a busy day in the box, as the Bucs fired 25 shots, including 13 on goal. Romero made 10 saves, and was the only keeper to be credited with a save in the match.
Delta State's tallies were the only shots on goal recorded by the Statesmen (3-6-1, 0-1 GSC).
Brunno Santos, a recent addition to the Statesmen varsity roster, netted his second goal of the season in the 47th minute to tie the score at 1-1. Clark Bradford notched a pair of scores for the Bucs, and assisted on Richardson's match-winner.
The Statesmen return to action Saturday when they host Christian Brothers at Delta Field. The match, scheduled for 1 p.m. is a makeup game that was rained out last week, and will not count in the conference standings.
