West Florida sweeps past Delta State soccer teams

CLEVELAND – The Argonauts and Lady Argonauts of West Florida posted a two-match sweep of the Statesmen soccer teams on a muddy Delta Field on Sunday.

The Lady Argonauts (14-0, 5-0 Gulf South Conference), the No. 1 team in the NCAA's Division II, powered their way to a 10-1 victory of the Lady Statesmen (2-9, 0-5 GSC).

In the men's game, the Statesmen (3-9-1, 0-4 GSC) succumbed by a score of 6-0 to their visitors from Pensacola. The Argonauts (8-4-2) improved to 4-0-1 in the Gulf South Conference standings.

In the opening match, the Lady Argonauts were led by Shakira Duncan, who netted four goals and an assist. Shaneka Gordon added two goals, including the match-winner.

West Florida scored the first 10 goals of the match. Mikael Mendez provided the Lady Statesmen's only goal in the 79th minute.

The senior has scored three goals in her last two matches. Mendez' tally on Sunday was the first-ever goal scored by a Lady Statesman against West Florida.

In the men's match, Stephen Munoz netted the match-winner in the 14th minute for the Argonauts.

The Statesmen had their best opportunity to get on the board denied when Brunno Santos' penalty kick attempt was blocked by UWF relief goalie David McNally in the 72nd minute.

Santos was awarded the kick after West Florida's Matt Tanner was given an automatic ejection for making a punching motion at a Delta State player. The Statesmen were unable to capitalize on the man advantage.

Three Delta State keepers saw action in the game. Flavio Romero ceded three goals and made four saves, while Justin Palmer and Brad Budd each made two saves apiece.

The Statesmen soccer teams play their final home matches of the season Friday when they host Alabama-Huntsville. The women play at 1 p.m. and the men follow at 3 p.m.
