Statesmen fall 2-1 in double overtime

Matthew Baker assisted on Aaron Wilbanks' match-tying goal.
SEARCY, Ark. – Connor Galloway converted a penalty kick in the third minute of the second overtime to lift the Harding Bisons to a 2-1 victory over Delta State on Friday.

On wet pitch in rainy conditions, Galloway scored both Harding goals as the Bisons (4-11) won their first Gulf South Conference match and improved their league record to 1-2.

The Statesmen (3-8-1) dropped to 0-2 Gulf South Conference play. Delta State was handed its third consecutive loss.

Aaron Wilbanks denied the hosts a win in regulation time when he fired home a shot from 18 yards that beat Harding keeper James Thurmond in the 89th minute. Wilbanks was credited with his first goal of the season, with Matthew Baker providing the assist.

The Bisons led most of the match thanks to Galloway's first goal, a one-timer off a corner kick in the 20th minute. Harding controlled most the pace of the game, outshooting the Statesmen 21-6.

Delta State goalkeeper Flavio Romero faced nine shots on goal and made seven saves, including two in overtime.

The Statesmen continue their two-match trek through Arkansas on Sunday when they travel to Ouachita Baptist. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., and will immediately follow the women's match between DSU and OBU.
