CLEVELAND – With little more than pride at stake and a desire to end the season on a winning note, the Delta Statesmen concluded the 2009 football season with a convincing 48-7 win over West Georgia on Saturday.
Trevar Deed rushed for a career-best 240 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries as the Statesmen (5-5, 4-4 Gulf South Conference) finished the regular season unbeaten at Parker Field at McCool Stadium for the third consecutive year.
Deed's rushing yards total was not only the junior's top mark as a Statesman – it was also the third-best single-game rushing performance in Delta State history. Deed was also Delta State's leading receiver Saturday, catching three passes for 90 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown reception for the game's first score.
The three touchdowns by Deed moved him into third-place tie on the school's career scoring list with 180 points. He shares the spot with Jeremy Ricks, who concluded his Delta State career in 2007. Deed will need 73 points his senior season to become the Statesmen's career leader in points.
For the season, Deed rushed for 931 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 67 passes for 805 yards with five touchdowns in 2009.
Senior middle linebacker
Lardester Hicks-Green was also highlighted at the conclusion of the game. Having set the all-time Delta State record for career tackles last week at Arkansas Tech, Hicks-Green participated in seven tackles against West Georgia, finishing his career with 343 stops.
Earlier this week, Hicks-Green was named a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Award, given annually to the nation's best player in the NCAA's Division II.
The Statesmen jumped out to a 21-0 lead late in the second period when quarterback
Garrett DeWitt found
Ray Chisolm for a 52-yard touchdown reception with 3:58 remaining before halftime. The Wolves scored their only touchdown of the game 98 seconds later on a 34-yard strike from Sean Gray to Kevin Myles.
The Statesmen would add one more score before the end of the first half when DeWitt found
Eldred King for a nine-yard score with six seconds remaining, capping an eight-play, 69-yard drive.
West Georgia was simply outplayed by the Statesmen, as Delta State outgained their visitors 586-190 in total offense for the game.
DeWitt completed 10-of-18 passes for 186 yards with three touchdown passes. A senior, he finished his career with 6,945 yards passing and moved into second place all-time on the career list Saturday. DeWitt passed Scott Butler, who passed for 6,917 yards from 1981-1984.
While Deed commanded the spotlight and the attention of the Wolves,
Eric Johnson was quietly efficient in his own right, rushing 12 times for 92 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback
Zak Mikel rushed 12 times for 54 yards, and
Rafael Mitchell added 15 yards rushing and a score on three carries.
Robert Watts was the Statesmen's leading tackler, making nine stops, including six unassisted tackles.
The Wolves finished the season with a 1-9 record, including a 1-7 record in the GSC. Jeremy Cook led West Georgia with 16 tackles.
