The Lady Statesmen (3-1) fell 1-0 to Drury University (1-0) in the opening game of the UAM Super 8 Classic, but exploded for 18 hits in the second game, downing Southern Indiana (0-1) 10-2.
Brooke Allgood pitched seven solid innings in the opener, but a wild pitch in the first inning allowed Kelly Ross to reach third base with one out, after leading off the inning with a walk and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amber Hayden. Ashley Balazs then drove her in for the game's only run.
Allgood (1-1) then settled down, scattering three hits over the final six innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Lady Statesmen had their chances at the plate, but couldn't get the timely hit the needed, stranding nine runners on base.
Brittany Davis (1-0) earned the win, allowing just four hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and three walks.
In the second game,
Edie Oliver (2-0) flirted with her second no-hitter in as many games, holding the Southern Indiana batters hitless through five innings, before they finally broke through with three hits in the sixth innings for two runs. It wasn't enough as the Lady Statesmen had already posted a nine-run lead, 9-0.
Delta State scored their first run of the tournament in the second inning when
Brooke Allgood legged out an infield hit and advanced to second on a throwing error by USI pitcher Stephanie Schneider. With two outs in the inning,
Paige Silverthorn drove her in with a single deep to left-centerfield.
Two errors proved to be the death of the Screaming Eagles in the sixth inning, as the Lady Statesmen capitalized with six hits for six runs, extending the lead to 9-0. They added another in the seventh inning when
Emily Hearn drove in
Callie Weaver to give the Lady Statesmen a 10-2 advantage.
Oliver retired the Screaming Eagles in order in the seventh to earn her second victory in as many starts. The junior from Eupora went seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Silverthorn and
Brittany Tillery both went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Weaver and Allgood were a perfect 4-for-4 in the game.
Schneider (0-1) was charged with the loss for Southern Indiana, allowing seven runs, three earned, on 13 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
The Lady Statesmen will continue play in the Super 8 Classic Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2:00 p.m. in a rematch with Drury and a 4:00 p.m. showdown with Missouri Southern.
