Long ball lifts Lady Statesmen; Oliver keeps rolling

The Lady Statesmen closed out the UAM Super 8 Classic with a sweep on the final day, improving to 7-1 on the season with a 4-2 victory over Quincy University and a 4-1 win over Missouri Southern State University. 

Edie Oliver (4-0) continued to roll in the circle in game one, allowing just two unearned runs, both in the first inning, on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. 

The Lady Statesmen offense responded quickly, tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first with an RBI-single by Brooke Allgood which scored Brittany Tillery, and an RBI-double by Paige Silverthorn scoring Emily Hearn

The Lady Statesmen added a run in the third with an RBI-walk by Brittany Eikner and another in the fifth inning on Eikner's RBI-single to stretch the lead to 4-2. 

The Lady Hawks threatened in the top of the seventh, getting two runners on with one out, but Oliver retired the next two hitters to end the game. 

Beth Schnurbusch was charged with the loss for Quincy, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and five walks. 

In game two, Brooke Allgood allowed a run in the top of the first inning against Missouri Southern, but didn't surrender any more, improving to 2-1 on the season. The junior allowed just six hits with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. 

The Lady Statesmen tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI-single by Eikner scoring Courtney Chism, who came in to pinch-run for Courtney Clark

Delta State added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo-home run by Clark to left-centerfield and the first career home run by Kristi Basso, a two-run blast to straight-away centerfield. 

Kelsey Williams (2-1) was charged with the loss for Missouri Southern, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. 

Eikner finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs, and Silverthorn was 3-for-5.

The Lady Statesmen will play again Friday, Feb. 20 against Indianapolis University at 10:00 a.m. and Missouri S&T at noon in Decatur, Ala., at the UAH Charger Chillout.
