Reddies shock Statesmen 84-68; DSU clinches No.2 seed at GSC Tournament

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –The Henderson State University men's basketball team shocked the Gulf South Conference West Division Saturday night with an 84-68 upset of Delta State. The Reddies entered the game in last place in the GSC West, while the Statesmen were playing for a share of the GSC West title.

The Reddies conclude the season 5-21 overall and 3-11 in GSC West play. The Statesmen fall to 20-7 and 10-4 in league play. Despite the loss, DSU clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament in Southaven March 4-8.

Henderson State's offense could not be stopped Saturday at the Duke Wells Center. The Reddies connected on 51 percent of their field goal attempts (26-of-51), including a blistering 63.6 percent from three-point range (14-of-22).

Delta State conversely could never find any offensive continuity, hitting on just 28-of-70 field goal attempts for 40.0 percent. DSU was just 2-of-16 from three-point land, and struggled at the free throw line (10-of-21).

One bright spot in the loss was rebounding, as the Statesmen out-rebounded the Reddies 41-34 with 22 offensive rebounds. DSU dominated the paint 46-12, but HSU's bench outscored the Statesmen 32-18.

The Statesmen placed three players in double figures led by Chad Akins and David Clark with 14 points apiece. Eric Spencer chipped in with 12.

HSU's Kyle Oldham led all scorers with 28 points on the night, connecting on 7-of-9 three-pointers. Martin Mitchell added 18 points, and Sean Romey turned in a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

The Reddies led at half-time 38-34, and outscored the Statesmen in the second frame 46-34.

The Statesmen return to the court March 4-8 at the DeSoto Civic Center for the 27th annual Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. While game times have not been finalized, the Statesmen will face the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Friday evening, March 6. Game times will be announced on Sunday.
