ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – A late 7-0 run by Ouachita Baptist University spelled doom for the Delta State women's basketball team 64-58 Thursday at Bill Vining Arena. The loss snapped a 31-game Gulf South Conference winning streak for the Lady Statesmen (17-6, 7-1 GSC), while giving the Lady Tigers (14-6. 4-4 GSC) new life in the conference race. It was the first GSC loss for DSU since losing to Southern Arkansas on Jan. 18, 2007.
After trailing 14-2 just four minutes into the contest, the Lady Statesmen found their stride and outscored the Lady Tigers 26-14 to close the half tied 28-28.
The Lady Statesmen shot 50 percent in the first half, connecting on 10-of-20 attempts from the field. OBU shot 47.4 percent on 9-of-19 attempts from the floor.
The second half was just as tight as the first, but the Lady Statesmen kept the lead with strong play inside the paint.
That all changed with 5:48 left to play, as OBU's Tamara Robinson hit a driving lay-up to cut the Lady Statesmen lead to one, 48-47.
On the ensuing possession, the Lady Tigers forced a tough shot by Bug Cooper and quickly took the lead on the other end thanks to Gabby Coleman's 28-foot three-pointer, 50-48, at the 4:58 mark.
A Gabby Coleman jumper and a deep three by Melissa Richardson quickly extended the OBU lead to 55-48 with 3:29 left to play.
DSU's
Moe Bell cut into the lead with a three-pointer from the right wing, making it a four point game, 55-51, with 3:03 on the clock.
OBU's Kim Beverly extended the lead again to six, 57-51, with 2:31 left.
The Lady Statesmen would cut the lead to three, but OBU made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
OBU's defensive adjustments in the second half held the Lady Statesmen to just 36.4 percent (12-of-33) from the field, while the Lady Tigers connected on 44.7 percent (12-of-27) of their shots.
OBU finished the game shooting 45.7 percent (21-of-46), 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from three-point range, and 70.8 percent from the line.
DSU shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from three, and 90.9 percent from the line (9-of-10).
Where OBU took advantage of DSU was on the boards (39-31) and bench scoring. The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Statesmen 34-4 off the bench, and for the first time in 17 games edged DSU in the paint 28-24.
Moe Bell,
Courtney Wilson, and
LaMaesha McAdory all led the Lady Statesmen with 14 points each. Bug Cooper also recorded six assists in the loss.
