PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Lady Statesmen were shutout in a two game sweep at the hands of the Lady Argonauts Sunday at West Florida, falling 7-0 and 3-0. With the losses, Delta State lost all three games in their series against the Gulf South Conference East Division opponent and fell to 11-6 on the season.
West Florida (11-2) was led by their stellar pitching duo of Jill Lafrance and Emily Burge, who combined to hold the Lady Statesmen to just five hits on the day. West Florida enjoyed a big offensive fifth inning in game one, while Lafrance provided her own offense in game two.
With the Lady Statesmen trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Kristee Wheeler hit a three-run home run that essentially put the game away for the Lady Argonauts.
Brooke Allgood had been pitching well, allowing just one run on two hits and four walks prior to the fifth, but it was then that the West Florida offense sparked to life and put the game away. Allgood went 4.2 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and six walks.
Burge (4-2) allowed just three hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks.
In the second game, West Florida took advantage of a leadoff double to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and Lafrance hit a home run in the bottom of the second to give herself an insurance run.The Lady Argonauts added one more in the fourth inning, and Lafrance kept the Lady Statesmen off the board to improve to 7-0. She allowed just two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.
Edie Oliver (7-3) allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.
The Lady Statesmen will begin Gulf South Conference play Saturday, March 7, as they travel to Monticello, Ark., for a two-day, four-game series with the Cotton Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello. The first game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
