Lady Statesmen use long ball to sweep Christian Brothers

CLEVELAND – Delta State softball swept the Lady Bucaneers of Christian Brothers University Saturday at University Field, claiming game one 4-2 and game two 7-6.

Despite about a 25 mile per hour wind blowing across the diamond from left to right and slightly in, the Lady Statesmen (15-10, 4-2 Gulf South Conference) powered three home runs in the second game off the bats of Brittany Tillery, Brittany Eikner and Edie Oliver to erase a four-run fifth inning by the Lady Bucs to take the victory.

Christian Brothers (10-10, 2-6 GSC) had the lead in both games going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Lady Statesmen would not be denied.

Brooke Allgood (4-4) earned the game two win in relief of Kate Moreland, allowing no runs and no hits in an inning and two-thirds, and Oliver was credited with the save, holding the Lady Bucs hitless in the seventh.

In game one, Oliver (9-5) allowed just two runs on six hits in seven innings with six strikeouts, and Eikner hit a two-run home run to right-centerfield in the bottom of the fifth to give the Lady Statesmen a 3-2 lead.

Eikner, a junior shortstop from Grenada, lead the Lady Statesmen at the plate, going 3-for-5 in the two games with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Nikki Dunn (9-4) was charged with the game one loss, allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Lady Statesmen will take on Christian Brothers again Sunday, March 29, with a double-header scheduled to begin at noon.
