Lady Statesmen sweep season series with Christian Brothers with pair of wins Sunday

CLEVELAND – The Lady Statesmen completed the season sweep of Christian Brothers University Sunday behind a pair of solid outings in the circle by juniors Edie Oliver and Kate Moreland, defeating the Lady Bucaneers 5-1 and 7-3.

After CBU (10-12, 2-8 Gulf South Conference) tied game one in the top of the fourth at 1-1, Brooke Allgood hit the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning over the leftfield fence to reclaim the lead for the Lady Statesmen (17-10, 6-2 GSC).

Delta State added two more in the fifth when Allgood laced a two-RBI single to rightfield to give the Lady Statesmen a 4-1 lead.

Oliver kept hitters off balance, and kept the ball in play, allowing only one run on five hits in seven innings to earn the win and improve her record to 10-5.

Nikki Dunn (9-5) was charged with the loss for the Lady Bucs, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Courtney Clark provided the offensive firepower in the second game, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, including a two-RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth.

Moreland was near flawless after finding her groove in the second inning. Christian took advantage of seeing-eye hits to score two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Starkville native allowed just one more hit over the next six innings, improving to 3-1 on the season. She struck out seven hitters and walked just two in the win.

Kallie McFatter (1-7) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in six innings.

The Lady Statesmen will be in Decatur, Ala., Thursday, April 2, with games against GSC East Division foes West Florida at 4:00 p.m. and North Alabama at 6:00 p.m. at the GSC Crossover.
