DECATUR, Ala. – The Lady Statesmen (17-12, 6-4 Gulf South Conference) were held to just two hits on the opening day of the Gulf South Conference Softball Crossover, falling 9-0 in five innings to No. 8 Valdosta State (31-5, 7-1 GSC) and 4-0 to No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville(30-2, 9-1 GSC).
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning,
Courtney Chism broke up Brianna Collis's no-hitter with her first hit of the season in a pinch hit appearance.
Collis finished the game with five strikeouts in five innings, improving her record to 7-0 for the Lady Blazers. April Hutchens did the most damage at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Marti Littlefield added a solo-home run.
Brooke Allgood (2-2) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits and five walks with one strikeout.
Caitlin Lee was just as flawless for Alabama-Huntsville, allowing just one hit to
Kristi Basso in the top of the sixth inning to improve to 5-0.
After allowing three runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a two-run home run to Beth Lawson,
Edie Oliver settled down to hold the Chargers to just one more run over five innings.
Oliver fell to 10-6, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
The Lady Statesmen will continue play at the GSC Crossover Saturday, April 4, when they take on West Alabama at noon.
