Lady Statesmen open GSC Tournament play Friday

SOUTHAVEN - The Delta State University softball team enters the 2009 Gulf South Conference Tournament as the #3 seed from the GSC West Division. DSU posted an overall record of 27-23 and finished an even 15-15 in GSC play. 

The Lady Statesmen will face the #2 seed from the East Division and #1 AFCA ranked University of AlabamaHuntsville in their opening round game on Friday. UAH defeated the Lady Statesmen 4-0 at the GSC Crossover in Decatur, Ala., earlier this season. The Lady Statesmen are a combined 4-15 against the tournament field, with four losses apiece against West Florida and Arkansas Tech. 

Three All-Gulf South Conference players will lead the Lady Statesmen against the tough tournament field, in which two teams are ranked in the nation's top seven. 

Shortstop Brittany Eikner was named First Team All-GSC, while center fielder Brittany Tillery and pitcher Edie Oliver claimed Second Team honors. 

Eikner has a career high five home runs and 27 runs batted in and has committed only four errors in 139 chances in the field. 

Tillery leads the GSC with 27 stolen bases. Tillery has also hit five homre runs, while driving in a team best 28. 

Oliver has posted a career high 125 strike outs in 202.2 innings pitched. The left handed pitcher is allowing an opponent batting average of only .254. 

In the second round, the Lady Statesmen will face either Arkansas Tech or West Alabama.
