CLEVELAND – Brandon Sigler, a decorated officer with the Mobile (Ala.) Police Department and former linebacker for Delta State University, was tragically shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex in Mobile on Thomas Road Tuesday, June 2. Sigler had served with the MPD for the past 18 months.
“Brandon was a warrior on and off the field. He was good young man, who wanted nothing but the best for his family and friends. Delta State lost a true champion today, and he will be missed,” said Randy Grierson, assistant football coach and member of former coach Rick Rhoades' staff during Sigler's time at DSU.
Sigler, a native of Mobile and a 2001 graduate of Murphy High School, played three seasons for the Statesmen from 2002-2004. During that time, the linebacker/fullback appeared in 26 games at middle and outside linebacker, recording 45 career tackles with four tackles-for-loss, and one sack.
“As a family here at DSU, we are deeply saddened to here of Brandon's passing,” stated Ron Roberts, Statesmen head coach. “Our thought and prayers are with his fiancé and his family at this time.”
Sigler is survived by his fiancé and mother, Wina Woods.
A public viewing has been scheduled for Friday from noon until 5 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St.
Visitation also will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1453 Old Shell Road, followed by a funeral service at noon.
