CLEVELAND – The youthful Delta State men's soccer team received a tough lesson in the rigors of high-level NCAA Division II soccer as they fell 8-1 to No. 9 Lynn University on Sunday.
Kyle Conrad and Paulo Vaz led the way for the Fighting Knights, as each player recorded a hat trick in the game.
David Horstmann (Rossville, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) scored the lone tally for the Statesmen, converting a penalty kick opportunity in the 54th minute to open the second-half scoring.
Lynn received goals from Scott Gordon and Gabe Taboada. The Knights took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
For the second straight game, Delta State goalkeepers had a busy afternoon between the pipes, as the Knights registered 27 shots in the game, 13 of which were on target to the goal.
Delta State gave up 29 shot attempts in Friday's 3-2 loss to Florida Tech.
The Statesmen hit the road for their next contest when they travel to Mississippi College in Clinton for a 4 p.m. match Tuesday. Delta State's next home match is Thursday, when the Statesmen host Union University at 3 p.m. at Delta Field.
