Statesmen, Lady Statesmen sweep soccer doubleheader from Louisiana College

The Delta State soccer teams both defeated Louisiana College
PINEVILLE, La. – The Delta State men's and women's soccer teams swept their nonconference doubleheader with Division III opponent Louisiana College on Friday, with the Statesmen winning 5-2 and the Lady Statesmen winning 1-0.

The Statesmen men scored four goals in the first half as they routed the hosting Wildcats for their second win of the season. Delta State improved to 2-3-1 on the season.

Five different Statesmen players scored goals in the game, including senior David Horstmann (Rossville, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) who netted his team-leading sixth goal in the 16th minute to give Delta State a 2-0 lead. He also assisted on Josh Sposato's (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) goal to open the scoring in the ninth minute.

The first collegiate goal scored by Liam Coulson (Gold Coast, Australia/Marymount College) turned out to be the game-winner that put the Statesmen ahead 3-0 in the 20th minute. Fellow countryman Joshua Jokic (Brisbane, Australia/Canterbury College) tallied his third goal of the season for Delta State.

Brunno Santos also scored his first collegiate goal in the game for Delta State.

The Statesmen fired 31 shots toward the Louisiana College goal in the match.

Starting goalkeeper Flavio Romero (Cartagena, Colombia/Colegio Britanico de Cartagena) gave up one goal in 38 minutes of action and made two saves. Mario DiRaimo saw his first bit of varsity action in goal and gave up a goal added a save in the final two minutes of the match.

Justin Palmer held Louisiana College scoreless over 51 minutes.

In the women's match, Sandra Nirva (Cary, Ill./River Ridge HS) took a pass from Jackie Kelly (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River HS) in the 67th minute and deposited a shot in the back of the net to lead the Lady Statesmen to a 1-0 over the Lady Wildcats.

Nirva's first goal of the season helped the Lady Statesmen improve to 2-1 on the year.

Sam Le Jeune (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) made five saves in goal as she notched her first shutout as a collegiate player.

Like the male counterparts after them, the Lady Statesmen littered the Louisiana College goal with shots, directing 23 of them toward the net. Delta State players forced Wildcats keeper Emily Breaux to make 13 saves.

The Lady Statesmen will be in action Sunday when they visit Ruston, La. to face Division I opponent Louisiana Tech. Match time is set for 3 p.m.

The men's and women's soccer team will travel to McKenzie, Tenn. on Thursday when they visit Bethel College. The women's teams will open the doubleheader with a 1 p.m. match.
