McKENZIE, Tenn. – Eric Rosas' golden goal 12 minutes into overtime lifted Bethel College to a 2-1 over Delta State on Thursday.
The goal ended roughly 95 consecutive minutes of scoreless play as Delta State fell to 2-4-1 with the loss.
The win lifted Bethel College, the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA, to 5-0-1.
The hosts jumped out to an early lead less than two minutes after the opening whistle when Mario Vila Boa sent a shot past Delta State goalkeeper
Flavio Romero.
The Statesmen did not have to wait long for an equalizer, as Josh Jokic netted his fourth goal of the season in the seventh minute.
David Horstmann provided the assist.
For Delta State, the match had an all too familiar feel to it. The ball stayed on the Statesmen's side of the field for most of the match, as Bethel College recorded 28 shots and 13 corner kicks.
The Statesmen defense held strong, however, as only eight of Bethel's 28 shots found their way to goal. Romero made six saves.
The Statesmen return home for their next match, a Sunday fixture against Christian Brothers University at Delta Field. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
