CLINTON - Michael Cooper's lone goal in the 97th minute off an assist from Stirling Foxworth lifted the Choctaws (1-0) of Mississippi College past the Statesmen (0-3) of Delta State, 1-0 in two overtimes, at Robinson-Hale Stadium. The Choctaws out shot the Statesmen 28-9 on the afternoon, but freshman goalie
Flavio Romero denied 10 MC shots on the day.
After a scoreless regulation, both teams turned up the intensity in overtime. In the first extra frame, the Statesmen tallied three shots, equaling their total from the previous 90 minutes, but MC keeper Andrew Dailey kept the green-and-white offense in check.
MC managed five shots in the first overtime, but Romero saved the only shot on goal.
In overtime two, the Statesmen again had their chances, but failed to convert. Leaving the door open for the Choctaws.
In the 97th minute, MC's Cooper broke behind the defense and blasted a shot to the back of the net for the overtime win. The goal was set-up on w well played ball by Foxworth.
