Statesmen win overtime thriller at Ouachita Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, ARK-For the first time in the history of the program on Sunday, the Delta State University Statesmen soccer team defeated an opponent that was currently ranked in the NCAA Regional rankings.

Jacob Stevenback headed in the game-winner nearly eight minutes into overtime off an assist from Eljay Allen to give the Statesmen the 3-2 non-conference win in overtime over Ouachita Baptist. 

The two sides remained scoreless after 45 minutes of action, but the action certainly took a dramatic turn in the later stages.

Patrick McPherson opened the scoring in the 53rd minute of the game for the Statesmen, which came from Allen.

In the 81st minute, OBU scored two goals in a span of 27 seconds. Rizvan Ceka took a penalty kick for OBU that put the Tigers on the board.

Victor Romero put OBU ahead 2-1 less than a minute later with a long-range shot.

Allen responded just over one minute later with his second goal of the season.

Stevenback responded with the first goal of his career in the first overtime.

The Statesmen (4-8-0) recorded 11 shots, eight of which were on goal, while OBU (7-4-1) recorded 16 shots, with eight on goal.

Delta State will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 13, as they host Lyon College.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
