CLEVELAND, Miss. – The No. 2 Delta State University Lady Statesmen (2-0) cruised to a 68-35 victory over the Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters (1-1) Saturday night in the final game of the 6th annual Lloyd Clark Classic at Walter Sillers Coliseum. DSU placed four players in double figures, including a game-high 12 from
Veronica Walker. The victory extended the Lady Statesmen's home winning streak to 50 games, which is eight shy of the school record (58, 1996-2000).
In game three of the LCC, Carson Newman bounced back to defeat Southern Arkansas 87-77.
Holding the Lady Railsplitters to just 19 percent in the first half, the Lady Statesmen jumped out to a 37-14 lead at the break.
Veronica Walker and
Sheena Johnson led the green-and-white with eight points each at the break.
DSU shot 52 percent from the floor in the first frame, connecting on 13-of-25 shots from the floor. LMU was a mere 6-of-31, including 1-of-8 from three. DSU out-rebounded LMU 26-14 as well.
LMU was led at the break by Whitney Holmes' four points.
The second half was much closer than the first, as LMU and DSU played to a 10-10 second half tie nine minutes into the period. DSU would put the game away in the final six minutes, cruising to the 33-point victory.
The Lady Statesmen shot 55.6 percent from the field for the game on 25-of-45 attempts, while holding LMU to 23 percent on 14-of-61 shots. DSU finished the game with a 43-32 edge on the boards, but LMU won the turnover battle 23-18.
Walker, who finished the game with eight boards, blocked six shots on the night for the Lady Statesmen. Bug Cooper finished with 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Freshman forward
Aubree Ray scored 10 points and grabbed four boards, while
Sheena Johnson dropped in 10 points.
Dayshalee Salaman led LMU with seven points off the bench. Whitney Holmes, Melanie Hemphill and Patrice Talley scored six points each.
Six players were also chosen for the All-Tournament Team, including CNC's Mandy Mendenhall, SAU's Ch'kia Lee, LMU's Patrice Talley and DSU's
Sheena Johnson and Sarita “Bug” Cooper. The LCC Most Outstanding Player was the Lady Statesmen's
Veronica Walker.
Delta State will continue its three-game home stand to open the season on Monday, Nov. 22, as the Lady Statesmen host Tougaloo Colege. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
