CLEVELAND, Miss. –
Brooke Rhodes scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead No. 2 Delta State (3-0) to an 86-42 thrashing of Tougaloo College (4-6) on Monday at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The victory extended the Lady Statesmen's home court winning streak to 51 games, just seven short of the record.
After a sluggish start that saw the Lady Bulldogs take a three point lead 11-14, the Lady Statesmen erupted offensively, outscoring Tougaloo 28-5 over the final nine minutes of the first half to lead 39-19 at the break. DSU shot 53 percent in the first half on 16-of-30 shooting, while holding TC to 7-of-36 from the floor.
Delta's defense held Tougaloo without a basket for 11:07 stretch in the first half before Jackson's basket with 21 seconds left in the half.
Brooke Rhodes sparked the Lady Statesmen off the bench, scoring eight points and grabbing five boards in 13 minutes.
Veronica Walker led all scorers with 11 points, while
Amber Powe added six points.
Victoria Jones paced Tougaloo with six points.
The second half saw coach Sandra Rushing go the youth on the bench to close out a pesky Lady Bulldogs squad. DSU outscored TC 47-23 in the second half and cruised to the 44 point win.
DSU shot 57.1 percent for the game on 36-of-63 attempts, including 9-of-22 from 3-point range. TC connected on just 15-of-65 shots (23.1 percent) and hit on a mere 3-of-19 3-point tries. DSU also out-rebounded TC 48-34, while outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 42-14 in the paint.
Rhodes finished the game with 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. The freshman from Pelahatchie hit on 7-of-12 shots, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. It was the first career double-double for the two-time MAIS State Player of the Year.
Veronica Walker also contributed with a double-double, adding 17 points and 10 boards.
Sheena Johnson had nine points, while
Tamara Reed had eight points off the bench.
Erica Grayson finished with a double-double for Tougaloo, scoring 10 point and clearing 10 rebounds.
The Lady Statesmen will travel to Huntsville, Ala., on Saturday, Nov. 27 for a showdown with the Lady Chargers of the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Spragins Hall.
