HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-Veronica Walker scored a team high 16 points, and hauled in a game high 14 rebounds, as the No.2 Delta State University Lady Statesmen defeated the University of Alabama-Huntsville Lady Chargers 60-52 Saturday at Spragins Hall.
The Lady Statesmen led by as many as 13 points in the first half, before the Lady Chargers cut the DSU lead to 31-22 at the break.
UAH used a strong performance from the floor in the opening half, hitting at a 42 percent clip. DSU wasn't far behind, going 14-of-34 (41%) from the field.
Walker's eight point 10 rebound performance in the first half led the Lady Statesmen, while UAH had three players score five points each.
After two free throws by Jordan Smith, the Lady Chargers trailed 54-52 with 2:50 remaining.
The Lady Statesmen responded with an 8-0 run to finish the game, with four of those points coming from Walker.
The two teams combined for only 11 free throws in the contest. UAH finished 6-of-8, while the Lady Statesmen were 2-of-3. DSU did not shoot a free throw in the second half.

Sheena Johnson and
Shameka Russell each had eight points to help the Lady Statesmen. Cooper finished with eight assists, and seven rebounds.
Smith led the way for UAH, with a game high 17 points off the bench.
DSU won the battle of the boards 34-28. The Lady Chargers finished with a solid 45.5 percentage from the floor, going 20-of-44, while DSU finished 28-of-65 (43 percent).
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Monday, as they travel to Florence, Ala., to take on the University of North Alabama Lions.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
