HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - The No. 8 Chargers (6-0) of the University of Alabama in Huntsville outscored the Statesmen of Delta State University (2-3) 49-20 in the second half to get the win 102-68 at Spragains Hall in Huntsville.
The Chargers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to start the first half after a three point basket from Zane Campbell and a layup and free throw by Jaime Smith. UAH shot 61.5 percent from the floor while shooting an impressive 63.6 percent from beyond the arch. Smith led all scorers at the half with 16 points on 4-5 from the floor and connecting on 7-8 free throws.
Senior guard Phil Turner paced DSU with 12 points on 3-5 from three point range and knocking down all three of his free throws.
The second half belonged to UAH as the Chargers outscored the Statesmen 49-20 while shooting 61.5 percent from the floor behind 15 points from Elliott Jones. Senior transfer Chris Poellnitz paced DSU with 16 points in the final period.
Poellnitz's 16 led the Statesmen while Turner added 12 and forwards Jamarkus Holt and Ken Mitchell chipped in 11 points each.
Jones of UAH led all scorers with 25 points while Smith and Campbell added 19 and 14 points.
The Statesmen return to the court on November 29 versus conference foe North Alabama. Tipoff is set for 8 pm in Florence, Ala.
