Johnson's jumper with one second remaining lifts No. 1 Lady Statesmen to 58-56 win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Sheena Johnson's jumper with one second left on the clock lifted the top-ranked Delta State women's basketball team to a 58-56 victory over previously unbeaten West Alabama Thursday night inside Pruitt Hall.  The Lady Statesmen improved to 6-0 on the year, while the Lady Tigers slipped to 4-1.

UWA tried its best to repeat last week's feat, when the Lady Tigers upset then-No. 1 Arkansas Tech 66-56 at Pruitt Hall.  The Lady Statesmen trailed by as many as 10, but clawed back to claim the key, in-region victory.

The Lady Statesmen exploded in the second half after trailing 28-22 at halftime.  DSU outscored UWA 36-28 in final frame, spurred by Veronica Walker's play to secure the win.

Delta State connected on 24-of-57 shots from the floor for 42.3 percent, while West Alabama hit on 39 percent of their shots, drilling 22-of-57 attempts.  Neither team lit it up from 3-point range, as the Lady Statesmen were just 1-of-9 from three and the Lady Tigers managed just 1-of-8 shots from deep.

UWA edged DSU 35-34 on the boards, but DSU won the turnover battle, forcing 16 while giving up 13.

Walker, a 6-foot-1 All-American center from Indianola, led the Lady Statesmen on the night with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  It was her third double-double of the year.

Johnson joined Walker in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.  Sarita "Bug" Cooper scored six points, handed out four assists, including one on Johnson's game-winning jumper, and pulled down six rebounds.  Shameka Russell finished with a season-high 13 points as well.

UWA was led by Mystee Dale's 15 points and five rebounds.

The Lady Statesmen will put their 50-game home win streak on the line this Saturday, Dec. 4, as Delta State hosts the Wolves of West Georgia (1-5).  Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Sillers Coliseum.
