CLEVELAND – The Delta State Statesmen defeated Arkansas-Monticello 82-69 Thursday at Sillers Coliseum to notch their fourth consecutive victory and their 12th in their last 13 games.
Marqueys Brown (Memphis, Tenn./Crichton College) scored 18 points and electrified the crowd with two powerful dunks in the last two minutes of the contest to put the game out of reach.
Brown was one of five players scoring in double-figures for the Statesmen (17-4, 8-1 Gulf South Conference).
Jeremie Davis (Arcadia, La./New Orleans) scored 14 points and
Eric Spencer came off the bench to score 12 points.
Cody Walker (Minden, La./LSU-Shreveport) scored 10 points, marking his highest total since joining the Statesmen.
Roderick Ollie (Indianola, Miss./UAB) also chipped in with 10 points to go along with three blocked shots.
Walker also handed out six assists, which was matched by
Joe McCray (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Nebraska), who led the team with seven rebounds and scored two points.
Anthony Lacey scored a game-high 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting for Arkansas-Monticello (10-9, 5-4 GSC). Jarrell Turner added 20 points for the Boll Weevils.
Both teams were scoring baskets seemingly at will in the second half, as DSU shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the field, while the Weevils shot 52 percent (17-of-33) after halftime.
For the game, the Statesmen outshot UAM 47 percent to 45 percent.
The Statesmen led 43-29 at halftime.
Delta State returns to action Saturday when the Statesmen travel to Memphis to face the Christian Brothers Buccaneers. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
