DECATUR, Ala.-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team repeated their pattern from Friday's action, as they split a pair of games at the UAH Charger Chill Out.
The Lady Statesmen rode a pair of freshmen in game one, as the Lady Statesmen defeated the University of Southern Indiana 1-0, but in game 2, DSU would drop a 7-2 decision to Augusta State.
DSU (6-2) used a complete game shutout from freshman pitcher
Brittany Gonzales (2-0) in game one to pick up their sixth win of the season. Gonzales pitched seven innings, scattering five hits, while walking two Eagles hitters.
Freshman second baseman
Taylor Hughes drove in what proved to be the game winning run in the top of the second inning to defeat USI, who fell to 0-3 in the loss.
Hughes grounded out to second base on the play, but pinch runner Jackie Kelley would score the games only run on the play.
Chelsea Carr and
Brooke Allgood both recorded a pair of hits for DSU in the win. Carr's second hit, a double, was the only extra base hit of the contest for DSU.
Dawn McClellan (0-2) was the hard luck loser for USI, as she allowed only one run on six hits. She struck out two DSU hitters, with one walk.
Game two would prove to be a different story, as Augusta State struck quickly with a two run homerun to left field by third baseman Jessica Thornton.
The Jaguars would hit two more homers in the game, including another two run blast and cruise to a 7-2 win.
Edie Oliver (3-1) took the loss, as he went four innings, allowing five runs on six hits, with two strikeouts.
Brittany Eikner and
Brooke Allgood were the stars at the plate for DSU. Eikner recorded a 3-for-4 game with an RBI at the plate, while Allgood added a pair of hits. The Lady Statesmen recorded 10 hits in the contest.
Emily Corish picked up the win in game one for ASU. Corrish allowed one run on five hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Sunday, as they take on Kentucky Wesleyan at 9 a.m. DSU will round out the Charger Chill Out at 1 p.m. against Columbus State.
