DECATUR, Ala.-The Delta State University softball team lost its fourth and fifth straight contests today at the Gulf South Conference Crossover.
The Lady Statesmen (24-20, 10-13) led both contests in the fifth inning before falling 11-3 in six innings to West Florida and dropped a 6-2 decision to Valdosta State.
In game one, the DSU bats which had been nearly dormant for the past three games, scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning against UWF starter Ashley Allgood.
After a solo home run by
Kim Hensley made the score 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, UWF exploded for an eight run fifth inning. UWF (31-9, 10-7) capitalized on two Lady Statesmen miscues in the inning. Melissa Chastang made the Lady Statesmen pay for the costly errors. The left fielder blasted a grand slam off relief pitcher
Edie Oliver to make the score 8-3.
UWF added three more runs in the top of the sixth to finish the scoring.
After recording only seven hits in their last 21 innings of play, DSU finished with nine hits in the contest. UWF finished with 13.
Brittany Eikner led the way for DSU at the plate. The senior shortstop finished 3-for-4. Oliver was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Courtney Clark was 1-for-3 with an RBI as well.
Brittany Gonzales (9-4) took the loss. The freshman worked 4.2 innings and allowed six unearned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and four walks.
Oliver went 0.1 innings of relief, and Kate Moreleand finished the last three outs of the contest. Oliver allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits, while Moreland allowed one run on two hits.
Allgood (11-4) got the win.
In game two of the day, the Lady Statesmen were forced to try to bounce back against the no. 2 ranked Valdosta State Lady Blazers.
The Lady Statesmen took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth with a pair of two out RBI base hits by Eikner and Oliver.
VSU answered big with a four run sixth inning. Alyssa Shirey tied the score at two after a mammoth home run against DSU starter
Kate Moreland. The Lady Blazers took advantage of two Lady Statesmen errors to make the score 5-2.
The Lady Blazers (29-4, 13-3) scored another unearned run in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring at 6-2.
VSU starting pitcher Holly Satterfield (16-2) dominated the Lady Statesmen hitters. The right handed pitcher tied her season high with ten strikeouts. Satterfield allowed two runs on six hits.
Moreland (4-5) had one of her best outings of the season. The senior allowed three earned runs on eight hits. She struck out five VSU hitters, and walked one.
Crista Richard and Oliver both finished the game 2-for-3.
The Lady Statesmen will attempt to rebound Saturday at 4 p.m. when they will take on the University of North Alabama at 4 p.m.
