Statesmen win second straight

Eljay Allen and the Statesmen won their second straight Wednesday
CLEVELAND-For the first time since the 2008 season, the Delta State University Statesmen soccer team won consecutive games, as DSU blanked Spring Hill College 2-0 Wednesday at Delta Field.

The Statesmen (2-4) had not won consecutive games, since winning five straight in the 2008 season.

Patrick McPherson scored the first goal of his career in the 22nd minute off a cross from Jacob Stevenback.

The Statesmen scored a quick insurance goal when freshman Eljay Allen had a long range strike find its way in, four minutes after the opening score.

SHC (1-4-1) totaled eight shots on goal, compared to seven for DSU, but Statesmen goalkeeper Flavio Romero earned his first clean sheet of the season.

The Statesmen outshout the Badgers 17-14 in the contest.

DSU will look for their third straight win Saturday, Sept. 18, as they host Freed Hardeman. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
