CLEVELAND-The Delta State University Statesmen soccer team scored its first goal of the season, but it was not nearly enough, as Bethel University raced past the Statesmen with four late goals to cruise to a 7-1 victory at Delta Field, on Monday.
Bethel took a 3-0 after the first 45 minutes of play, and did not look back. With the score at 3-0 in the 80th minute, Adam Bundle scored the first goal of his DSU career, and the first goal of the season for the Statesmen.
The first goal was even more dramatic, due to the fact that the Statesmen were down to only 10 players, at the time.
With the score at 3-1 Bethel scored four goals in the final eight minutes, including a pair from Justin Haskell to seal the win.
DSU was out shot 30-4 in the contest, and recorded two shots on goal, compared to 17 for Bethel.
The Statesmen will look for their first win of the season on Wednesday Sept. 8, as they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to take on Faulkner University.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
