Lady Statesmen tie school record with 68-61 win over OBU; 58-straight at Sillers Coliseum

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State University (14-0, 2-0 GSC) tied the school's 58-game consecutive home court win streak Thursday night, as the top-ranked Lady Statesmen defeated the visiting Lady Tigers of Ouachita Baptist University (10-4, 1-1 GSC), 68-61, at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Senior guard Sheena Johnson and Veronica Walker turned in double-double performances to lead the green-and-white.

The Lady Statesmen tied the Sillers win streak that had stood since the legendary Margaret Wade patrolled the sideline in 1978. The victory also tied the Lady Statesmen for the fifth longest streak in DII.

After an explosive first half offensively that saw the Lady Statesmen take a 41-31 lead into the locker room, the second half settled down into a defensive showdown between the two GSC foes. DSU shot 58.6 percent in the first half, but struggled in the second half shooting a mere 37.5 percent to finish the game connecting on 49.1 percent (27-of-55). OBU hit on 46.4 percent in the first and just 35.5 percent to finish at 40.7 percent (24-of-59). Delta State out-rebounded Ouachita Baptist 44-28 and narrowly outscored them in the paint 36-26.
