Statesmen lose a nail-biter to the Bisons of Harding University 88-80 at Rhodes Field House.

SEARCY Ark. –The Delta State University Statesmen were in a grueling fight from beginning to end against the Harding University Bisons, who ultimately defeated the Statesmen 88-80 Saturday, January 15 at Rhodes Field House.

Harding's own Stephen Blake helped in the defeat scoring 22 points. Four other players for the Bisons scored 11 or more points proving their effective teamwork.

Jay Murphy had his best game of his career scoring 15 points, rebounding five times and dishing out five assists. The true freshman proved his abilities despite the loss.

Phil Turner turned in the most points for the Statesmen scoring 25 points. He also brought in eight rebounds for the night.

Chris Poellnitz had a terrific game as well scoring 21 points, rebounding seven times and getting one assist.

In the first half of the game, the Statesmen lagged behind the Bisons 47 -39. The green-and-white shot just 43.8 percent from the floor (14-32). However, they shot an impressive 89.9 percent from behind the line making eight of their nine free throw attempts.

Phil Turner helped keep the lead at a close distance scoring 12 points before halftime.

Jay Murphy also had a good first half scoring seven points, rebounding 4 times, and handing three assists.

Ultimately, the Statesmen shooting 46.7 percent from the floor was the separating factor from the Bisons who shot 52.7 percent.

Delta State will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., on Thursday, January 20 to take on the Reddies of Henderson State. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m at the Duke Wells Center.
